Workshop Assessing Students
Omschrijving
Assessment plays a key role in education. It ensures a minimum standard. It has a huge influence on where students direct their efforts (“will this be part of the exam?”) and on how they experience their studies. And of course, assessment is also used as a basis on which important decisions about students’ futures are taken.
For whom
This course is intended for all non-Dutch-speaking lecturers or Ph.D. students who are involved in assessing students. It is also open to those who do speak Dutch but prefer to take a workshop in English together with international colleagues.
Results
After this workshop, you should be able to
• evaluate to what extent the assessment of a module meets the main requirements for assessment (transparency, validity, reliability, practicality, positive impact on learning);
• construct a specification table for an exam;
• write exam questions (both closed and open questions) that are unambiguous and clearly focused;
• construct a marking scheme (rubric) for open-ended assignments.
Content
In this workshop, we will use theoretical insights about assessment to tackle practical questions such as how to ensure an exam is a fair representation of the course objectives, how to write questions that really test what you want to test, and how to develop a fair marking scheme (or rubric) for open ended assignments such as essays or projects. During the day, you will work on your own exams and rubrics, so you should go home with a clear idea of how to further develop your own assessment methods.
Relationship to the BKO teaching qualification
Designing assessment is part of the competence area “designing courses” in the UvA lecturers competence overview. Those who would like to gain their University Teaching Qualification (BKO) can take this workshop in combination with the initial training course and the workshop on supervising students.
